Why Patch Cord RFQs Need More Than a Length and Quantity
Fiber optic patch cords look simple on a purchase list, but a missing detail can change the quotation review. A request that only says “LC patch cord, 3m, 500 pcs” still leaves the supplier to ask about fiber mode, polish type, cable diameter, jacket material, color, label, packing and application.
For distributors, contractors and data center cabling teams, the goal is not to write a long document. The goal is to include the few details that make the product comparable and quote-ready.
Core Specifications to Include
- Connector type: LC, SC, FC, ST or hybrid connector combinations.
- Polish type: UPC or APC, especially when SC/APC or LC/APC is required for access-network use.
- Fiber mode: singlemode or multimode; include G652D, G657A1, G657A2, OM3 or OM4 when the project has a defined requirement.
- Cable diameter: common RFQ options include 0.9 mm, 2.0 mm and 3.0 mm, depending on installation and handling needs.
- Jacket requirement: PVC, LSZH or project-required jacket material.
- Length and color: provide a length list rather than only a total quantity if multiple lengths are required.
- Label and packing: state whether the order needs neutral packing, project labels or private label packaging.
Common Buyer Scenarios
Distributor replenishment: keep the request simple and grouped by connector, polish, mode, length and color. Add packing requirements if the products will be resold under a private label or neutral packaging.
FTTH / ODN projects: patch cords may be quoted with pigtails, adapters, ODF, PLC splitters, drop cable and fast connectors. Group the bill of materials by network stage so the supplier can review compatibility and packing flow.
Data center cabling: patch cords often sit beside MTP/MPO assemblies, MPO module boxes, high-density patch panels, AOC/DAC and optical transceivers. Include rack or panel context when the patch cord list belongs to a larger cabling project.
